News sources are reporting that President Trump is considering terminating the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. This move would turn our nation’s back on immigrant youth who are valued members of our communities. Terminating DACA would place the nearly 800,000 DREAMers whom the program allows to work and live legally in the United States at immediate risk of deportation. We need to call on our elected leaders TODAY to keep the DACA program intact!

Major Anti-Trafficking Law Expiring in 2017

On July 12, the United States House of Representatives voted to reauthorize the Trafficking Victims Protection Act. Now our attention turns toward the Senate.

Act Now: Protect the progress we’ve made over fifteen years. Urge Congress to reauthorize the Trafficking Victims Protection Act.

You’ve seen it in the news, tragic stories of adults and children, victims of human trafficking, transported by semi-trailer in deadly heat. We at Polaris hear similar stories daily at the National Human Trafficking Hotline we operate.

Unfortunately, the criminal networks who exploit people through force, fraud, and coercion for forced labor or commercial sex are becoming more sophisticated in their approaches and are increasing the scope of their activities. There’s never been a more important time to strengthen and reauthorize the TVPA.

Parishioners from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in McAllen welcomed a Cardinal from the Archdiocese of Chicago on Tuesday.

Cardinal Blase Cupich visited the Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday to deliver a special donation of $100,000 to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church on behalf of the Vatican.

The fund was given to help with the construction of the new Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen. The new facility will be dedicated to provide assistance for immigrants and refugees coming to the area.

“First floor will be an area to provide service,” said Catholic Charities executive director Sister Norma Pimentel. “We also want an area for education components where people, groups and students can come and get educated on the whole reality of the immigrants and refugees. What we want is to make a center that is hurricane resistant.”

Catholic Charities plans to have the center completed by late 2019. In the meantime, they will continue to service immigrants in their temporary center.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church will continue to accept donations, both monetary and material.

Cupich also presented La Posada Providence Shelter in San Benito, and Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Hidalgo County with a total of $75,000.

Season of Creation Prayer Service

The Season of Creation begins with the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation on September 1st, which Pope Francis instituted for our Church in 2015 out of shared concern with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew for the future of creation.  The Season ends on October 4th with the Feast of St. Francis.

To help you and your parish, school, or religious community pray and act during the Season of Creation, Catholic Climate Covenant, in partnership with the Columban Center for Advocacy and Outreach, has produced:

Finding God in the Wilderness: Season of Creation Prayer Service Series 2017

The Prayer Service is a four-part series designed to be prayed each Sunday after Mass during the Season of Creation. Each service lasts about 10-15 minutes and incorporates a reflection on the Sunday readings, viewed through the lens of creation care. The series culminates with Catholic Climate Covenant’s Feast of St. Francis program.
